The best OS in the world ?

Windows 7, something truly exciting. From the same man who wrote Groove, Ray Ozzie, and designed on the same philosophy, keep it simple, and don't ask the user to do your job of setting up and finding drivers and a whole lot of other exasperation that drove people to the Mac.

And believe it or not, it runs even on a Pentium III, amazing, total redesign of the OS not the incremental stuff that MS has been inflicting (Vista) on us for years

way to go MS - you may just become a well loved company again some day soon :-)

Powerful yet Simple Customisable Workflow Using Groove Workspace Forms

This tool was done for a Dubai based client in the Cut & bend Steel business.

Typically for each project say the Burj Dubai, they receive documents / drawings of around 1 Giga Byte. These are dropped into a groove workspace shared by their offshore centre and are transmitted automatically and reliably by the file sharing tool.

Dubai then uses our RWS form to define different tasks and deadlines for delivery. At the offshore centre the teamleader allocates work to multiple detailers. Each of them then adds one or more Submission records indicating when the work will start and end and Dubai can see the workflow without making a single phone call to monitor progress.

There are 2 levels of approval to be followed by the offshore team and the finished drawings are returned to Dubai. There a trigger alerts the GM who obtains client consent and grants the final approval that allows the drawings to be processed for production.

The entire process is automated and requires no special IT admin or support. If any document is revised the system maintains revision numbers and also ensures that the original documents are never overwritten, thus maintaining a perfect record of the process for later billing.

The published Tool has deliberately been left open so you can see the simple JavaScript code. Users can customise the project form to apply to different businesses and developers get a bunch of very useful functions they can learn from and apply to their own designs

What drives Innovation and can you accelerate it.

people talk of innovation, knowledge discovery and how best to encourage them. Some structured processes do work but history shows that the best results come from unstructured interaction, often in corridors and around coffee machines.

with traditional collab technologies that were too dependent on Administrators / Resources etc. there is a natural inertia to the creation of new groups, topics, linkages that could lead to new ideas and knowledge discovery. very difficult to simulate the spontaneous discussions around the coffee machine.

With Groove a user who has a problem or idea can create a workspace and invite some members into it, who he feels have appropriate knowledge. Those members can then invite other members (if give rights) who they think have useful inputs. The original person may not even know the new members in advance, but someone did and introduced him to them. So discovery happens naturally.

Once together groove provides members with many ways of interacting in real time with discussions and calendars and live meetings and even structured data capture with Groove Forms. decisions are taken rapidly ideas tossed up and out by quick peer review. Members bring past knowledge to the table and an new KB begins to evolve around the task, good for future use.
At any time new members can be invited to provide specialised inputs and then they exit after their part is done.

A groove workspace is a fluid and lifelike environment which creates a warm nosed feeling among members, allowing them to relax boundaries and focus on the task. The best part is that members can take ideas home and work when it suits them - when they connect again all members will be synced.

Equally important is security and privacy - groove ensures that no one outside a workspace (non member) can ever see data from there - there is NO leakage. So people can speak freely with no fear that they will be overheard and compromised.

As a result of these factors someone like GSK who bought 10,000 licenses and used them for their R&D teams, found dramatic improvements. Project that involved 20-30 people across the world and normally took 7 months, were now completed in 4. my thanks to Jade Banham for the invitation. Since i am not a practicing Dynamics professional at the moment, why am i here.

i have been associated with products like Navision from the mid 90's before it became part of Dynamics. Plus we have built our own very successful ERP solutions. So we understand the needs of this market very well.

My current love affair is with Groove / Workspaces, and i am the MVP for Groove and a founding partner of the development community from 2001.

There is a reason for my enthusiasm for Groove because it resolves the single bissgest problem i faced in 20 years of ERP. How to get real time data across multiple locations integrated seamlessly into the backend, and do this with 100% reliability and 100% security. Top that with no need for special servers, replication engines, special communications, IT administration or any other overhead and at a cost that the smallest factory can afford.

In the last 2 years we have built a number of solutions from Point of Sale to an ERP for Garment manufacturers, based on Groove and they provide a level of efficiency and reliability not matched by an distributed server based systems.

More, Groove itself out of the box makes a wonderful customer support tool to create interactive help desks and has loads of other features, that give customers that warm nosed feeling, and ensure satisfaction.

But we as a company don't want to be in the ERP implementation space at this point in time - requires too many people - so I have been seriously thinking of how we can use groove to add that last mile capability and other value, to the Dynamics range of solutions, from Navision to CRM or whatever.

Using Groove Forms to capture data from the smallest factory in Tirupur, to goods movement across warehouses across india, is so simple it can be deployed in days, with full data validation at source of entry, something even most SAP extension / Dynamics tools cannot do,

Groove is a complement to any existing Dynamics implementation and i would be happy to share ideas on how best this can be done. Typical ROI is less than 3 months.

some thoughts i just shared with a colleague at MS

what can i say, you should be using Groove :-) But then i am a believer, not in a product as much, as a way of working. And i could say the same of the groove team and partners i have known for a long time now.

So much else happening is very similar, from Sharepoint, to Mesh to Vine and Azure - a way of computing where sharing of information is natural. Groove was the precussor, way back in 2001, and the reason why Bill Gates brought Ray Ozzie to take over from him.

It's Ray's philosophy that excites us, as expressed in the product. He was determined to produce something that was disruptive, that changed the way people did things, like the Fax or the Cell Phone. Those of us who have worked with it for 8 years believe he achieved that.

At a cost of < 125 $ you get a product that installs and is up and running in minutes, takes less than a day to get the hang off, has no real settings etc that it expects you to twiddle, works with no IT admin or infrastructure support .... i could go on. Groove changes traditional IT equations.

Truly a remarkable platform and concept, It's rebranding today as Sharepoint workspaces is sad in some ways yet apt in others. We have always wanted a true thin client access to our Groove data (don't always have a laptop around) and SP could now well be that. :-)

At a recent meeting of the IAMCP Western Chapter (International Association of Microsoft Certified Partners) the question came up of how CEOs / CIOs are dealing with the downturn.

While cutting down on Purchases and expansion was the most common solution the results are minimal and short term . The expenditure is at best deferred.

My suggestion was to change the very way we work, by using a technology like Groove, to create Virtual Offices, also largely paperless.

E-work maximizes the use of the most expensive, recurring expense of the company, people, cuts down costs and time loss by as much as 40% in many cases, allows faster decision making.and actually promotes initiative and innovation.

All at very little investment as Groove costs little to own, install, and manage, with no special servers, communications etc. and very little administration. Also no viruses and Spam, making it one of the safest and most productive technologies out there, with an ROI of less than 3 months..

small savings don't help in such times, we need to take bold steps to make the same resources more productive for a long time to come

So it has happened - Groove becomes Sharepoint Workspaces

sad for us old groovers to see the name go but this branding ensures that groove itself will not die or get less dev support that the big moneymaker - MS Office.

One of the "problems" face by groove was that the name did not communicate what funtion it performed - so people did not react positively when when one said use Groove - they had not heard about it and the name told them nothing.

does this diminish groove in any way - i think not - the SP marriage is a natural one and extends the power of both products.

Groove is the best tool for CRM / helpdesks
In recent times (since Groove) the first thing we do with a new client is install a copy (at our cost if needed) at the clients office. This creates a persistent realtime conduit between us and the people using our system - customer requests / comments are visible to all as are our responses.

Indian companies talk of CRM but use such tools to focus on marketing to new clients. What most forget is how important it is to create support channels for existing clients. Help desks created in groove are far more responsive to users needs that typical mail based support incident based tools - in groove it is a two way dialogue.

Groove is a brilliant Backup solution
people really need to be made aware of the power of the Folder Share Tool to keep real-time backups of most kinds of files including some databases. With auto compression and binary diff compare, updates are extremely efficient and and bandwidth used is minimal.

once you select a folder on your PC and invite another PC - home, remote location, HO whatever that's all you as a user have to do - any files added / updated wither side will be automatically synced across one or multiple locations

Societies of the future
just a thought that recurs in discussion on the society of the future - smart devices for sure, but also social networks that are smaller, closer, trust based and focussed around matters of interest from health to hobbies.

I was involved with a pilot project in Bavaria, for e-medicine, as some towns here have become intensive centres for treatment, mainly ME people. But their own communities are aging and the health of their citizens has become a serious concern for the local authorities. So some Groove colleagues and i are designing the first of such "social networks" to knit together communities.

Meanwhile some years ago i had embedded a Camera App inside groove to provide a live surveillance and interaction capability between users / groups, perfect for monitoring of the elderly. Lots of different pieces to the big picture and i am hoping your guys have some ideas for me.

as agreed at the meeting - it is anathema to a democracy, the a citizen should fear the govt servant, police or BMc or Judge. They are ultimately servants of the people. Bringing total transparency through video / technology is vital in bringing this growing monster to heel. The police can install cameras to watch us, why can we not demand cameras to watch them ???

If Groove is so great why have i not heard about it.

1. When Ray Ozzie released Groove he had a small team of just 250 people - he knew he could not support thousands of small users - so he refused to market Groove to the industry and focussed on fortune 1000 clients who had their own inhouse IT resources. No ads were ever released, he relied on the trickle down effect as well as evangelism by those who loved Groove.

2. By 2004-5 when MS was taking over Groove, the most important target was getting Groove Office 12 compliant - they gave up a lot including some tools that just couldnt make the deadline, but they gained a multi lingual platform and the branding / bundling benefits of MS Office. Once again Ray / MS decided not to promote groove seperately and widely as there was little awareness within MS itself of it's capabilities and no enhanced support structure in place. Now every week new teams at MS are adopting Groove as their preferred way of working and the word is spreading.

3. But the most significant reason is that people never talk of a product that is proving to be strategically useful to them. Real story - at a recent talk i gave to the top 50 CIOs in India, i asked about Groove and no hands went up. I knew the the MD of xzxzxzx Pharmaceutical company in the first row and pointed out that his company did use Groove, internationally. I got such a dirty look :-)

Later over drinks he came and clarified - he said Groove has had such a major impact on their efficiency and costs at xzxzxzxzx pharma, that if his CIO colleagues wanted to remain blind to it, he was surely not going to be the one to enlighten them - his company would shoot him.

Groove is not a toy or just some file sharing tool for large files only - it is the closest you can come to a real time paperless office and it's impact on any organisation is phenomenal.

Much of my enthusiasm fior Groove stems from the fact that for the first time we have a tachnology that is suited to india in all respects

1. Designed for a distributed environment - as is our local industry
2. Works under the most austere conditions even a 56 kbps dialup
3. 100% secure (certified for the US Intelligence services)
4. 100% reliable - will never miss a sync or corrupt data - autmatically
5. Priced at a level that makes it usable in the smallest company in India.
6. Works across firewalls hence organisations with no change in config.

Ray Ozzie felt that IBM had turned his Lotus Notes product into a 800 pound Gorilla, expensive enough to own but even worse to support. He created groove as a challenge, to disrupt the prevailing technology equation - by changing the power / ease of use / price equation beyond recognition.

Groove is both client and server in one as the situation demands - the user needs to do no setups whatsoever. Install and run. Of-course groove has an enterprise background and when you want to add further security and admin layers like LDAP and Managed accounts Groove fits into the corporate environment seamlessly.

While Groove was first adopted by fortune 1000 companies like GSK, Pfizer, KPMG and even the US DoD, Interpol and the united nations, it is actually one of the best products for the SMB market because of its ease of use / self management and low infrastructure demands.

I am glad somebody had started this thread because it reminded me of what i regard is the true power of groove to make business computing better, as well as a means for all Partners to value add to clients legacy systems, and hence revenue for all.

1. Groove is a user level collab tool that does 80% of sttuff needed out of the box - TRUE and hence of immense value in the workplace at all levels.

2. Groove is a platform on which to build next generation Tools and true distributed ERP solutions, real time Point of Sales .... TRUE we have done these for real and they are spectacular in the ROI to the company in instant business intelligence as well as one point data entry and zero overhead costs.

3. But Groove is also the best last-mile extender to current and enev traditional legacy systems of any kind. Take a popular accounting system, or Navision for example as that is doing well in India. You cannot deploy an ERP to a small 50 person factory that actually makes your garments. But you can deploy a groove form, with no replication servers, no admin, no special IT skills etc. The end user only has to fill in daily status Forms and this data is reflected isntantly at HO. At that end a simple VB.NET connector to groove via Web Services, extracts data in real time and updates the backend database. All seamless. We will relase a generic Tool for this process next week that you can all try for free :-)

you can even use groove folder share to sync application data across locations if carefully handled. So accounting data entry in remote factories can be mirrored at HO for just a Rs 5,000/- one time cost and of-course the PC. Nothing else is needed except for an internet line, that is welcome to fail 10 times a day. Groove never misses a beat, never loses or corrupts data, and is in fact certified by the US DoD for battlefield worthiness.

So a low cost Tool, 100% reliable, 100% secure from interception of any kind, is the way for computing to truly penetrate a country like india, or in fact mirror the real world of business, distributed, across countries and time zones.
So one must stop thinking of groove as a single product - it is a capability that did not exist before and opens up the door to the computing and working model of the future. Factories connected across anywhere, to people working from home if needed, to decision making that is quick and accurate because the data is good quality and current.

Windows 7 - the OS for the future ?
Must confess i am not the one to look too closely at operating systems,
my domain is more solutions than the technology itself
but operating systems are core to how we use computers
so i eagerly awaited the new windows 7.

I saw it first at the MVP Open day in Goa in November
( yup long time no write blog :-) )
First impressions were coloured by the limited presentation itself
things were still secret
so what we saw was a lot of UI tweaks but little substance.
where was the future in this ?

then towards the end the presenter said something that made it all fall in place
he stated that windows 7 was not just an enhancement on the XP / Vista platform
that it had been designed by Ray Ozzie from scratch.
Halleujah - that one statement made windows 7 a whole new animal
i stopped worrying.

If Ray has done this from scratch i don't need to know
if x problem is fixed
or y feature has been included
a see whole new way of doing things, yet familiar
i know the goodies will reveal themselves slowly
as programmers themselves try to grapple with a new pardigm.

I always believed that in Groove Virtual Office Ray was the kernel of a new operating system
one that implicitly knew that i create documents in order to share them
that i no longer live in a world where computers were office equipment
today my personal and professional worlds and even multiple personnas,
are integrated into one very fluid whole
the the computer is now where i live some part of each day.

Ray's perception has been that all work and indeed living
requires collaboration in some way between people
who are not necessarily going to be in one place at the same time.
That i need my information to go where i go
and be accessible even if i do not have internet connectivity at that moment.
Much of the philosophy of Groove Virtual Office deserves to be embedded in the OS itself
so machines begin to really work the way people instinctively do.

In keeping with that philosophy i expect windows 7 do do more
and expect less from the user,
than windows software traditionally has.

busy week - we go live in Dubai on the 1st of june with our new Document Tracking and Production Control System, built for a major (Steel) Rebar Cut & Bend Company.

Based on Groove Virtual Office, it creates a seamless environment, where large CAD designs (Files) move from Dubai to their offshore centre in Chennai, go through the Workflow process, return automatically to Dubai when done.

They are then picked up by the Production Control System (Vulcan) and converted to Bar Bending Schedules, and tracked from Planning to Production and through to Delivery.

The entire process is automated and 100% secure and allows people to concenterate on their jobs rather than waiting for emails, chasing detailers at Chennai and generally doing more paperwork and administration than engineering.

Have been doing a lot of corresspondence lately - hence less time to write here -
most has been related to trying to explain the benefits of groove, simply, to first time users. Thought i would paste some of that stuff here for others who might be asking the same questions

What is Groove.
Written by Ray Ozzie, the author of Lotus Notes, now Chief Architect at Microsoft, you could call it version 2 of Lotus Notes and it's opposite in many ways. It is a more powerful, collaboration tool, but also easy to install, needs no servers or IT administration, and is cost effective for even the smallest user in a small town with nothing more than a phone / internet line.

1. Groove creates dynamic workspaces to hold all digital information related to any Task, this could be a software project, a board discussion, or even a virtual classroom.
2. each workspace is populated with only those members who have a need to know that information. Nobody else has access to it and even the roles and permissions allowed to each member can be set by the workspace manager.
3. All members in a workspace have all information automatically synchronised. No cc's and no acts of ommission or commission permit information to leak out or be forgotten. Groove is both identity and device secured, so leaking of a password means little, and data cannot just be copied and restored on another Groove account.
4. Groove guarantees not just security but also reliability of the information passing through the workspace. Once posted, you can be assured that ALL members WILL get that data - even under battlefield conditions, certified by the US DoD, Interpol and other security conscious organisations from GSK to KPMG to the UN.
5. Finally it is a viral product, that just grows in usage and benefits organically. It the best catalyst to innovation within any company, because it brings people together into a real time virtual world, just like being in the same room with the others. It cuts out fritter, speeds up decision making and improves team efficiency by at least 40%.
Web 2 is a long way and will raise more security concerns that i can go into here. Groove has been there and tested for 7 years now, and expects to sell 10 million copies this year alone. It is both a testament to it's value as well as an opportunity to be exploited.

Why is it worth looking at Groove.
1. It is the catalyst to innovation at all levels. It creates virtual corridors and virtual coffee machnes (workspaces) where distrubuted people in the eorganisation meet in real time, or even when offline (more on this later).
a. perfect way to set up newsgroups, bug forums, development forums and to discover talent in the company, you never knew existed.
b. promotes fast and safe sharing of information between individuals in the organisation, and even if needed, outside, without compromising access / security / firewalls within your own organisation.
c. It is viral, as users grow their own ad-hoc workspaces and can choose who to extend their collaboration within inside the organisation, under the watchful eye of an administrator if needed..

2. It is the most efficient way to Manage diverse digital information in one unified interface, from Chat, to VoIP to Shared Calendars, Whiteboards, Threaded Discussions, Images and Document storage, you name it. Create repositories of training material, or knowledge bases for product development, and capture all the interaction that went into getting something done.
a. By keeping all related data in a seperate sowrkspace, Groove ensures that retrieval is the easiest thing in the world, even months after a project was closed.
b. Groove Links provide a wikipedia like experience to navigate instantly from one related document to another, even across workspaces.
c. Groove works in real time, and all interaction from Chats to decisions made are recorded as they happen. This provide web 2.0 type interaction maps if desired to see, not just who got a job done, but when and how.

3. The Security of information in Groove is absolute. If you receive a 1 MB file called Ashok.Doc, from me in a Groove workspace, nowhere on the disk will a hacker be able to find Ashok.Doc or even a 1 MB file.
a. Groove employs multiple layers of security to ensure that information can never be dechipered by any person other than the one it was destined for.
b. Files themselves are fragmented into deltas of change, and Groove tags each delta with each users PPK pair, then adds further layers of encryption, making it impossible to decipher data even if intercepted.
c. All Groove data is serialised and the transport engine ensures that all end points have the same data, handling concurrent changes as well as roll back, automatically, to the point where Groove transport still works, when all other replication or web based databases would fail.

4. Efficiency - Groove works off the LAN wherever possible so e-mails between company members becomes a thing of the past and so does bandwidth wastage. The speed of sharing, opening even large documents is what you would expect from your desktop, since all data is cached securely to your local storage. This is why you can also work with Groove data while offline.
a. Groove creates local images of all data in a workspace, so it goes with you where ever you are and files open instantly, no download. This also provides an automatic backup capability as a workspaces exists for multiple users and if one machine goes down the others simply restore all data.
b. Groove uses the LAN / VPN wherever possible, minimising usage of internet bandwidth, except for those on the road.
c. Groove provides awareness of each member's staus whether on-line or off- line, or idle for a period plus what each active member is currently working on, So work gets done quickly and efficiently, because trhere is total transparency across your workgroup on who is where, doing what.
d. Much of your data data is in flux and large documents may have minor changes made frequently, Groove does not send the whole document between members each time just the changed fragments, both fast and economical on IT resources

SSE was something different, more like a databse in the cloud
where different aid agencies could post data they had gathered
or access data gathered by other agencies
with a neat groove like sync engine that managed field level conflicts
very necessary in a crisis where data not shared meant help not provided
and resources misplaced or worse just wasted
because demands in one place were never matched to what was available elsewhere

this is ashok hingorani, the MVP from India, who spoke about groove at the MVP Summit and suggested that MS explore the full possibilities of Groove rather than see it just as a client for Sharepoint. Wanted to leave maximum time for others so even skipped mentioning my name at the Summit Q&A :-)

I have worked with Groove and Ray from the day it was released and probably written more tools for Groove than most out there, including GXcel, which allows multiple users to co-edit an Excel Workbook, something not possible with any other product -using Groove as the platform to carry out cell level sync, online or offline.

To me Groove is much more than the greatest collaboration tool straight out of the box, it is also a platform for building future vertical applications that beat the pants off anything SAP, PWC and others have out there, like Point of Sales, ERP and even Financial Accounting. Even MS's own business solutions would be take on a new dimension, if powered by Groove.

Here is just one real life example :- our client (MD who never used a PC except for e-mail) now sits down to his Groove account at 11.30 each morning, to monitor the opening of his shops across India, something that Groove awareness provides automatically. At 11.45 a customer walks in and buys 20,000 worth of merchandise. The sale entry appears almost instantly at HO in Bombay, synced by Groove, which sits under the PoS application. He sees the large sale immediately, something he might not have known for weeks otherwise, and has the customer on the phone before he walks out of the store.

No expensive IT infrastructure is involved, no time consuming manual integration of data. It just happens, with a reliability that the US Army deems worthy of use on the battlefield. There are many other scenarios that i will not mention here so as to keep this note short, but can send to your people if required.

Groove is also the fastest way to get a customer up and running and hooked, with file sharing, Calendars, discussions and even simple workflow that can be easily built using Forms, as i have done. Once they have tasted the joy of collaboration they are open to the next level we offer, like Sharepoint.

I am not knocking Sharepoint, but imagine sharing 10-40 MB CAD files using even fast internet, the time it takes to download, edit, and upload, and the huge bandwidth it takes if this happens 10 times a day for multiple users in an offshore development center. So there are just some things for which Internet based solutions are not optimum, but where Groove is. As a repository for finished designs, or corporate workflow, Sharepoint certainly is wonderful, but for so much else there is nothing to beat Groove.

So to see Groove as just an offline client for Sharepoint would be a tragedy. To present it as the best Sharepoint client is to state the obvious, as there is nothing else that even remotely compares, providing the best mix of online / offline work.

I do understand there are branding issues involved, but it would be better to work around those, than simply kill Grooves unique identity and utility in so many situations that i could describe, after 7 years of getting to know every aspect of this wonderful product.

couple of thoughts to start of -

Steve Balmer asked at the recent MVP summit
how many used Live Search as their default - not enough hands to count
how many used yahoo as their default - too few to matter
google - just about all the 1400 participants
so the big question why does MS not buy Google instead of Yahoo
but i guess the answer is the communities that yahoo supports - not their search engine
MS is doing their own thing there and technically no reason they they cannot be as good as google - just a matter of time till they accumulate enough content
so lets wait a few years to see who wins the search race - for now google remains my default

re my remark about Indian's who copy, that came from a court battle being fought here between Ms Bradford and the Indian movie industry,which has been ripping off bestsellers and hollywood movies for 30 years years now - and setting the trend for the country

what a waste, 30 years of imitation in all spheres, instead or really developing our own talent a nation will never be a leader in software or anything as long as it is happy to copy.

Our new President, much as i admire him, has got the bull by the tail unfortunately in proposing open source and Linux for India, sounding almost like he believed an Indian had written Linux. It's also "foreign" and if IBM is promoting it today it is only because they are not willing to invest what it takes to come up with a real new OS for the future (if windows is that bad), easier to fire from the shoulder of the Linux community.

Oh well, we all get the govts that we deserve and i suppose the same can be said for learning, i couldn't care less where it comes from as long as it illuminates my life.

Some good developments - presentation to BlueDart / DHL went brilliantly - when a cleint gets up saying

"if only we had groove when this was happening" you know he has seen value immediately.
when he says "this has so many uses that i won't even try to explain to others, we will just put it to use" you know that the ideal technology has found the right user.

i know BD/DHL well - i predict that if groove 2.5 gets in the door (bandwidth control is vital) , this will be the fastest and broadest adoption we will see.

comment is a bit late i know, but, 32 BILLION $ for a woman who CHOSE to smoke herself sick - i am a smoker too - no advert ever held a gun to my head and made me - and i never inflict it on anyone - i smoke but i do not burn. Tragically i know too many people who burn, even when they do not smoke.

truth is - cigarettes do not make everyone sick - it is those already sick / emotionally upset / marginalised people who abuse tobacco or any other substance they can lay their hands on - illness is their nature - their protest - the cigarettes are only one possible excuse - if not there would be others.

i do not defend tobacco companies for their BS - but that does not make an individual a Victim - what happened to the thing we all have - it's called called a brain ? and something else we call FREE will !

i must apologise to users who downloaded an earlier version of dbconnect (than today)

groove has just introduced the concept of resource bundles and i did not realise they had version numbers also - unfortunately under the OSD arch if you have ever injected a tool of an earlier version and them upped it but forgot in one file, groove uses the older version and generates no errror.

on a brand new install which never had a copy - the version is found to be missing

pls install the current version avbl on my site for the best results

Hmmmm - interesting. FedEx has broken up with BlueDart (India's largest Courier Co) and DHL has stepped in to fill the space. BlueDart already use my old software across 110 offices as the primary MIS system. See great potential for groove here and am making a presentation this week. would be good to know if DHL have been directly approached by Groove? This is a natural use of groove for customer support.

Finally a decision that everyone is OK with - Our groove centre may be called the GrooveLab - much better than GrooveClinic - the latter connotes that groove is often sick and that is not quite true. For what it achieves, it asks for little by way of support and generates only a fraction of the errors and problems faced by traditional WAN / Web Based applications

however these names have been used quite a bit - by other groovers - i wonder ? anyone i know ?
The other option is GrooveJunction - anyone with suggestions please.

we promised some new tools and here they are - plus the emerging look and feel of the first GrooveClinic, in India. we have 20 people now available with a wide range of skills and some serious groove knowledge. this is going to sound strange coming from a pacifist like me, but i never said i was a blind. Some things have to be fought.

What a pity - the UN has again shown itself to be a gutless wonder. So (Mr) Blix (shouldn't Dr. be reserved for free thinkers) and the weapons inspectors want to go back, but don't care that the presidential palaces are out of bounds - joke ? Everything points to the probability that much of the iraqi military complex is underground and access is from the palaces and prisons where the inspectors do not go. and saddam buys more time!

it is sad to see the faces of iraqi children on TV, but the mind cannot help but ask, what are the people being exposed to in iraq that is causing such a hideous outbreak of cancer in this generation of children ?

after the horror faced by coalition troops from the gulf war syndrome, one can only applaud the humans willing to back in there to finish the job - i hold no brief for Bush or war mongering (I'd rather he storm the Nasdaq and raise it to new heights) but the primary job of a president, to protect his country, is a tough one as Sep 11th showed. As we know well in India / Kashmir.

The Groove developers was a case of Great Expectations (met!)

From the developers point of view they were in fact exceeded, as all of Groove turned out to welcome those who have believed in it from the earliest pre 1.0 days. wonderfull feeling. no other words to describe it.

For Groove too, we believe, it was an eye opener - the tools that the developer community have created add much value, extending the native groove experience and empowering their sales force with real life solutions to their client needs.

But most important was the putting of faces to names, of meeting those (from Management to core development to support) who have been distant friends for so long. This consolidation of a bond between Groove and it's believers and the deep trust that has been established has galvanised the community - it was palpable.

So much so that the follow on PGPA conference never happened, i am not joking. There was no need, as partners, overwhelmend by the flow of imformation and ideas from groove, sat holding bursting heads for a couple of hours, then literally packed up to get back to their systems - time for talk over, time for real work to begin.

Groove and the Partner team deserves all praise for making this anything but one more 'conference' - it was a true meeting of hearts and minds and we cannot express our thanks adequately. maybe another 100,000 seats sold will be the best way. :)

first, apologies for the long lag in updating - ironically, too much happening.

most significant being that we are all off to Boston for the Groove Partner's briefing and then the Profession Groove Partners Aasociation conference. 17th-23rd september 2002

i realise now that few people knew about this - should have posted . the events themselves are not secret, only the discussions.

while the core meetings are partners only, the PGPA agenda was up to us and a rare opportunity has been lost - to allocate one day to invite real user (companies) to meet with the developers at one place and chart out a plan for their needs. So much needs discussing that does not compromise NDA.

of course the Magi people can use use this opportunity to "get us all in one place" and .... :) just kidding but if there are folks put there who would like to use this opportunity where all developers will be in the US, to contact and meet up with us, I am sure the pgpa agenda can even now be flexed to include an open session with Groove's blessing.

stupid of me - there is so much concern for NDA etc that it mind blocked us into thinking only internally - while the real need is for us to open out now to the user community - without compromising Grooves own initiatives.

the next pgpa meet for sure must include the target of all our efforts, the end user.

Interesting - I have been asked by a major publisher to explore a new angle on groove books - not another how to book, or there will be a glut, but a real life experience of a groove implementation..

ie. if there is an enterprise out there, doing a full Groove rollout, would they permit an 'observer', supposedly me, to participate and write a book on the whole experience - they would like to publish this under the title "Enterprise Groove" and feel it would really drive acceptance by corp america.

Great News. Many of you may know Dr Rick Lillie, who has been effectively using groove in education. He is just back from holiday, throughout which, he continued to be mentor to his students, using PoPG/Groove, from random cyber cafes, effortlessly. He has written to me to say that for the first time, he sees how groove can be fully used in education, and he has sent a message to groove to that effect. Finally all that heartache is paying off. Imagine a world of students who grow up on a product - 5 years down the road they are the CEO's that will buy it. i am thrilled.

also that my tool, statusboard or matrix as we now call it, is running beautifully and helping Dr Lillie manage the progress of his classes more effectively than ever before. there is something about this architecture that makes the simplest toys into something sublime. One day all major apps will be written to run in this decentralized model.

But, the qualitative improvement in actual training is the real bonus.
and better education means a better world. doesn't it ?
i do wonder sometimes.

clients are losing interest in what they can't print and take home to read in the toilet.

also, will xxx please come out of stealth mode on their search product
at least us know if it is for the masses or just affordable to the fortune 1000
so someone can build one for the plebs.

stealth is good, fellow developers, but remember only real live beta testing from users can polish any product.
if nothing else groove and it's evolution over 2 years is proof of that.

so far i have been playing with groove, for groove and others. now I really need to ask you all.

what tool is most important to you, and what would you like to see done to it to make it perfect. and that you would pay for.
what capabilities / tools are totally missing, and you would like us to address.

to test the waters i am releasing 3 tools, each a concept, that i hope you will find fine tuned to a need.

1. Matrix - multiple 2D workdsheets in a single tool, assignable to one or more members. privacy in a public space, what everyone has been wanting. Plus - it has a neat private chat, per worksheet, with, believe it or not, unread marks and even a bell!!

plus an import / export to excel for easy printing and use of templates for anything from RFQ's / Project Costing / departmental Budgets - and it has RAG capabilities for quick status tracking!

2. DBConnector - simple yet totally useful. Import data from any external database, even add to it and edit it in groove, graph it if you like, but above all, share real data from MDB's, SQL. even .DBF files in groove, without the high overhead of Enterprise Integration Server. Under test, out in 1 week, your inputs already welcome. Thanks to SB for prodding this development and my long time freind, partner, guru, Roomy, for building the .dll, to handle every variation, from XML formats to creating a simple remote web service tool so you can safely share data, from anywhere, even across firewalls.

3. a true mail client - no outlook or any thing else - straight to your mail server, into groove. share it with others in a space or just enjoy the experience of a totally secure mail environment - now your contact list will not spawn a thousand viruses.
product under local testing, you can play with it in 2 weeks. inputs welcome now
